By the late 90s, horror was a tired genre – think remakes of old franchises going straight to VHS, and the same old scares. In 1996, Wes Craven, master of the form and director of hits such as THE HILLS HAVE EYES, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS reinvented the horror genre with SCREAM – ruining a thousand teen sleepovers and launching a small industry in tacky plastic halloween masks in the process. With SCREAM, Craven scared the living hell out of a whole new generation and revitalized the scary movie industry, with a smart and darkly comic take on the slasher movie. SCREAM was quickly followed by SCREAM 2, the two films shot back to back with the same cast of 90s stars – and many critics argued SCREAM 2 was the better and scarier film.
SCREAM
Master of the form, cult horror director Wes Craven reinvented the genre in 1996, with Scream. After a series of mysterious deaths befalls their small town, an offbeat group of friends led by Sidney Prescott become the target of a masked killer. As the body count begins to rise, Sidney and her friends find themselves contemplating the "rules" of horror films as they find themselves living in a real-life one.
