The 39 Steps (1935)
Beautiful, mysterious woman pursued by gunman. Sounds like a spy story
The Nomad heads north to a brand new location on our pop-up map, The Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.
Seen by many as the original Hitchcock thriller, The 39 Steps set the masterful tone for all the director's future work. Birthplace of the 'MacGuffin' and the 'Hitchcock Hero', the film tells the story of a man in London who agrees when a mysterious woman, claiming to be a counterespionage agent, asks to go home with him. But when the agent is killed and the man becomes the prime suspect, he must go on the run to save himself and stop a the spy ring that killed her.
Made at a time when film-makers were experimenting with sound, Hitchcock defied convention by using silence to heighten the tension. Over eighty years later and The 39 Steps has stood the test of time. Come to Gleneagles this September and see if you can solve the mystery of… The 39 Steps.
