Take a trip down memory lane with an afternoon of archive footage and old documentary films from Southwark Local History Library, screened in one of the former Biscuit Factory’s warehouses. Carefully curated by local resident and founder of the Biscuit Factory Museum, Gary Magold, the films span from 1931 to current day and include life on the docks, May Day marches, an antifascist march, working at Peek Frean’s, and a lot more. Gary will introduce the films, and teas, coffees and biscuits will be provided. Please feel free to come and go as you please.

Some activities of the Bermondsey Borough Council (1931):

Bermondsey Council’s health information film, which strived to improve public health 3-3.30pm

Bermondsey events of 1937 and 1938:

Featuring the exterior and interior of the newly built Spa Road Health Centre, the opening of Silver Street playground with Ada Salter and the May Day march of 1938. 3.30-3.45pm

May Day (1939):

A rare and antifascist march from Bermondsey to Hyde Park. 3.50-3.55pm

Tower Bridge Road (1940s):

The hustle and bustle of Tower Bridge Road market and Southwark Park Road. 3.55-4.05pm

Hayes Wharf (1968):

A rare view of life on the docks. 4.05-4.15pm 

Visit to Southwark of Her Majesty the Queen (1977):

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip visit the Surrey Docks. 4.20-4.30pm 

Old Ways New Ways (1988):

A Sands Films documentary made in 1988 as the Peek Frean’s factory in Bermondsey was slowly closing down. The film is entirely told by employees of the plant. 4.30-5.30pm
