Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
What a loss to spend that much time with someone, only to find out that she’s a stranger.
Welcome back to The Hoxton, Shoreditch for an alt. Valentine's Day tale which is: "technically ingenious and sophisticated." (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian).
Depressed and heart-broken, Joel (Jim Carrey) meets Clementine (Kate Winslet) in a seaside café. But something feels...different. A serious case of déja vu leads Joel down a rabbit hole in his mind. He unlocks the mystery of why Clementine feels so familiar: they used to be in a relationship but, when it failed, Joel sought out treatment to erase her completely from his memory. Joel quickly learns that erasing someone you once loved is easier said than done. Emotions run high in this deeply-felt, highly original film from the fantastically innovative writer-director Michel Gondry (Be Kind, Rewind; The Science of Sleep; all those great Daft Punk videos) and co-written with Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich; Adaptation; Synecdoche, New York). Audiences will be reeled in with trompe l'oeil worlds and surrealist set-ups but will be held steadfast with seriously good storytelling - and some great supporting performances from Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson and many more.
