Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
I'm more like the Terminator than you!
Directed by Taika Waititi who has cut his teeth on everything from Marvel blockbuster smashes (Thor: Ragnarok) to horror-mockumentary (What We Do In The Shadows), Hunt For The Wilderpeople takes the best aspects from this so far off-beat career trajectory and produces a sure-fire oddball treat. This time he offers a bizarre outback adventure with excellent comedy timing, kept on point by the unlikely buddy pairing of Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), a troublesome foster kid, and his grumpy foster Uncle, 'Uncle Hec' (Sam Neil) who accidentally go missing in the bush. Deftly balancing humanity and humour, it's hard not come away from this film with a glow, whole heartedly invested in the nuanced, lovable characters, and making it easy to see why it was on so many 'Best Of 2016' lists.
"A big-hearted picture full of small, understated moments of magic, the New Zealand-based comedy-drama Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an off-kilter charmer." (Wendy Ide, The Guardian)
