Growing up; loving and learning to let go; mothers and daughters; it's all here in this classic, classy, bittersweet indie drama about a spikey teen and her controlling mum.

Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) is a spikey, individualistic teen who doesn't really fit in at her California Catholic high school.  She has a best friend who she is vaguely competitive with, enjoys a couple of almost-romances, and aspires to escape her mundane SoCal life to a liberal, artsy college in the East, in spite of not being academically inclined ("yet," as she says).  Her controlling mother (Laurie Metcalf) - also passionate but burdened by Life and Responsibilities - has probably forgotten what it's like to have your Future an invitingly blank page still ahead of you. Gerwig's script revels in the troublesome teen she obviously was at the same time as she shows rueful understanding of her mother's challenges.  It's classy, classic stuff. You'll laugh (a lot), possibly cry (a little), and you'll leave Citypoint feeling like you've found a couple of new friends!
