Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
There's two kinds of people in this world, there's winners and there's losers. Okay, you know what the difference is? Winners don't give up.
This 2006 American indie grew from a well-regarded Sundance Film Festival hit into a rapturously adored Oscar underdog, winning gongs for Alan Arkin and screenwriter Michael Arndt. A pre-teen wannabe beauty queen piles into a creaky old camper van with her arguing parents, suicidal uncle, batty grandpa and emo older brother for a cross-country road trip towards the mother of all beauty pageants. Pathos, wicked jokes and an ultimately uplifting experience come courtesy of an unbeatable comedy cast including Alan Arkin, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Paul Dano, Steve Carell and nine-year-old Abigail Breslin, whose climactic performance to Rick James’ Super Freak is unforgettable. Oh, and the rest of the soundtrack’s a stonker as well.
