Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
In darkness, there can be light. In misery, there can be beauty. In death, there can be life...
Pan’s Labyrinth is the great Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s magnum opus - his Citizen Kane. It’s a dark, adult fairy tale that speaks to us as a parable on the themes of innocence and evil, destiny and personal choice, death and rebirth. 12-year-old Ofelia moves reluctantly to the countryside with her mother and terrible new stepfather. Near the girl’s new home lies a ruined labyrinth, into which she regularly begins to plunge. There she meets the imposing and sinister faun of the title and a succession of beautifully fearsome creatures from the brilliant, dark depths of the director’s imagination.
