SOLD OUT - Romeo + Juliet (1996)
“Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn”
Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? We know where you should be, joining us for Baz Luhrmann’s contemporary adaptation of literature's most famous and tragic love story. Taking the original tale and shifting it slightly, we have two warring business empires, but still the same complications between Leonardo DiCaprio (Romeo) & Claire Danes (Juliet).
Relocated from fair Verona to Verona Beach, USA, this vibrant, zeitgeisty mid-90s adaptation retains the bard's original dialogue, performed with gusto by a hip young cast and set to a perfectly-pitched soundtrack (Radiohead, The Cardigans, Des'ree, Garbage among others). The film is studded with fantastic supporting performances from John Leguizamo (Tybalt), Harold Perrineau (Mercutio), Pete Postlethwaite (Friar Laurence), Miriam Margolyes (Nurse) and many more.
The film went on to be a huge success, grossing worldwide takings of, at the last count, $147,554,998. Shakespeare could have bought a lot of quill & ink sets with that. Now it’s time for you to enter stage right, sit back, and enjoy this long told story in all its modern glory.
