In the oldest of the Royal Parks, covering 183 acres, part of the Greenwich World Heritage site and home to the Prime Meridian Line, we invite you to join us in the fitting surroundings of The Old Royal Observatory, for a series of three outdoor cinema screenings themed around travel through space and time.
“Roads? Where we’re going….we don’t need roads.” One of the most perfectly crowd-pleasing films of all time, Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future is an expertly crafted series of thrilling set pieces and sparkling performances, which spawned a wildly successful trilogy and a long list of lines and phrases which have since entered everyday parlance. Michael J. Fox is totally charming as Marty ‘Calvin Klein’ McFly, despite the fact he’s a peeping-Tom, Billy No Mates, who hangs around with a mad scientist four times his age and finds himself in a love triangle involving his Mom. How about that? Anyway, what better backdrop than the Old Royal Observatory? Britain’s first purpose-built scientific research centre, built in 1675 to a design by Sir Christopher Wren, commissioned by King Charles III, the observatory is home to the Prime Meridian, the official starting point of each new day and year. Come along for a special evening of cinema under the stars to wonder, as so many have here, at the possibilities of space and time travel. We won’t be bringing our flux capacitor or weapons-grade plutonium, but we guarantee you surprises are in store. Keep your eyes peeled.
Why not book tickets for all three Nomad screenings at The Old Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park? On Sunday 7 August, we present Stanley Kubrick’s epic 2001: A Space Odyssey, while Monday 8 August brings WALL-E to our huge screen.
The Pavilion Teahouse will be open, serving food and drink, including alcohol. Bring something warm to wear for after sunset. Please be advised that at this venue, the audience will be seated on a hard surface so it is essential to bring rugs, cushions, low chairs, deckchairs, inflatables or whatever will keep your comfortable throughout the screening! There will also be blankets, ponchos and inflatable back supports on sale, should you need any extra supplies.
Places are limited so please book early to avoid maaasive disappointment.
We’ll be doing 20 Nomad events in London’s Royal Parks this year - view the full schedule for Royal Parks outdoor cinema.
Please note that for public safety and environmental reasons, glass is not permitted anywhere in the Royal Parks. If bringing a picnic, please bring plastic cups and plastic bottles instead. Many thanks.
The two sites at Greenwich Park are both located adjacent to the Royal Observatory Gardens (boasting the best views in London!). The screening site for “Back To The Future” and “2001″ is in front of the Wolfe statue, for “Wall-e” it is in the Royal Observatory Gardens. Both are accessed from the Blackheath Gate or from St Mary’s Gate, close to Greenwich High Street.
