For the most part, it is pretty easy to tell what animal characters are in the Disney universe. After all, a lot of their names have something to do with the animals they are meant to be, they resemble the animal a lot, or it is mentioned pretty often.
However, Goofy is a much more ambiguous character. Despite being prominently in the limelight alongside other well-known characters like Donald and Mickey, there isn’t much known about him and he has a less obvious figure. This has led many people to wonder, “is Goofy a cow”.
About Goofy

Goofy is a character that has been around and associated with Disney for a long time. He was first introduced in 1932, in Mickey’s Revue. He has a unique southern drawl and his personality matches his name, often the comedic relief in a movie or show, due to his lack of knowledge.
Despite his silly and overly optimistic nature, or perhaps because of it, Goofy has become well-loved by many Disney fans and is one of the iconic characters to symbolize Disney. He takes this role alongside Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, much to the chagrin of Walt Disney himself.
Goofy is present in most Disney parks, comics, TV shows, movies, and even video games. Even those that don’t pay much attention to the franchise can recognize this adorable black-and-tan character in his classic orange shirt, black vest, blue pants, and bright green hat.
Is Goofy a Cow?

Goofy is not a cow. There is often a lot of misunderstanding, since, technically, Goofy and Pluto are the same species. However, Goofy is actually a dog. His original name was Dippy Dawg. He was never meant to be used more than once, but quickly became a fan favorite, and was pushed into the starlight.
It is also in part because he is rarely described as being a dog. Unlike Mickey and Donald, who both have last names that describe the animal they are, Goofy does not. In fact, based on the fact that his son, Max, has the last name Goof, we can either assume that he just goes by a nickname that is based on his last name, or that his full name is Goofy Goof.
His species is only mentioned a few times, and very briefly. His species was brought up in a couple of the original shorts, once in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, a commercial for Disney, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the 2013 Disney Mickey Mouse series, and one by Hades in House of Mouse.
Another reason he may be mistaken for a cow is that in some shows and movies, he is often dating or paired with a Clarabelle Cow. With Minnie and Mickey being the same species, as well as Donald and Daisy, it is not a stretch to assume that Goofy and Clarabelle are the same or similar species.
It doesn’t help that they look fairly similar either. They both sport green headpieces and have black bodies, white gloves, and elongated tan faces. However, if you look closely, you can see that Clarabelle has nostrils whereas Goofy has a little black nose. They also have different ears, and Goofy lacks horns of any sort.
