Join us in the grounds of beautiful Benenden Hospital Trust for a slice of classic movie musical Americana. Nestling in 350 acres of gorgeous Kentish farm and parkland, just the opportunity to have a look at this stunning place is worth the ticket price alone - and if you can fit in a hip replacement at the same time, then even better… So round up your friends and family, slip on your Pink Ladies or T-Birds jacket, get yourself some delicious burgers and soda pops (or bring your own) and warm up for the film with some suitably 50s-flavoured music.
We at the Nomad have discussed this and we believe that it is not medically possible to dislike Grease. Pretend as much as you want, it won’t wash with us. We’ll nod sagely as you list the myriad reasons for the film’s inherent crapness, we’ll gently pat your shoulder as you point out the fact that there is something inherently strange about watching 30-year-olds acting like teenagers, we’ll even admit that some of the songs are a bit shonky. But man alive, it’s got something.
John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John play our heroes Danny and Sandy with a level of gusto that just wouldn’t work in these more cynical times. They sing and dance their way through the movie with an almost heartbreaking enthusiasm, helped along by some cracking support (a special mention for Stockard Channing as the ball-busting Rizzo) and a songbook chock-a-block with catchy ditties.
So come with us, as we turn the Kent countryside (careful there, James Naughtie) into 1950s California for the evening. As this aint California, may we recommend something warm to wear for after sunset, and perhaps a low chair or blanket to sit on? Ah well-ah well-ah well-ah well-ah huh…!
(Come pay your tributes to the legendary Kenickie - actor Jeff Conaway - who passed away this year…)
