Hugo Weaving really has tried his hand at everything. He’s been one of the elves in The Lord of the Rings, He’s been the meanest - and most cloned - of all the agents in The Matrix, he’s even played the voice of a sheepdog in Babe. But perhaps most memorable of all, he played the divine drag queen Mitzi Del Bra in this flamboyant and utterly fabulous 1994 cult classic.
This delightful deluge of tack-a-rama tells the story of two drag queens and a transsexual on a journey in their gorgeous lavender bus from Sydney to Alice Springs to perform their show at a holiday resort. The characters are brazen, filthy and mischievous to say the very least and the journey is riotous and outrageous with more comical cattiness than you can shake a stick at.
However, as Bernadette says, “Being a man one day and a woman the next isn’t an easy thing to do” and there is also a very poignant side to this road trip; it is fundamentally a story of acceptance and is often revered as a pivotal film in terms of bringing LGBT issues into mainstream consciousness.
Joined by Guy Pearce (Memento, LA Confidential) at his bitchiest and veteran British actor Terence Stamp, these three femmes sashayed and vogued into our hearts in possibly the campest road trip ever and in doing so, put Australian cinema well and truly on the world cinema map.
So come on ladies, start your engines!
