“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve…”

No film more wonderfully captures the fleeting brilliance of youth than Rob Reiner’s coming-of-age classic Stand By Me, as we are taken on a rite of passage adventure for four teens on the brink of manhood, who embark on a search for the body of a missing boy. Narrated by Richard Dreyfuss and starring teen-heart-throb - and gone-too-soon brother of Joaquin - River Phoenix, along with Corey Feldman and Kiefer Sutherland.

The story is told by shy, bookish Gordie, whose family has been left wrecked after his own brother’s death earlier that summer. When he takes along his four best friends - all misfits for different reasons - their main aim is to get their picture in the paper, but the few days that unfold will tell them more about themselves than they imagined - and shape them as men forever.

Set in the summer of 1959, the soundtrack features smash hits of the day from Buddy Holly to Jerry Lee Lewis and the music blends beautifully into the very landscape that the boys trundle along, creating an atmosphere that engulfs you in every way.

With a mixing of the hilarious ponderings of adolescence, near-death experiences, and moments of real solidarity and tenderness, this is a complete classic that will make you laugh, cry, and - for a moment - wish you were twelve again.
