Tough love in a tough world.
Award-winning Walter Salles’ 1998 Latin American classic tells the story of embittered, middle aged, Dora, escorting a young boy across Brazil, to find the father he has never known, after his mother dies in Rio’s main train station. Not exactly a jolly scenario! Brought to life by the vivacious and incredibly talented Fernanda Montenegro and the precocious Vinícius de Oliveira, this is a tale of two worlds colliding: two characters finding peace through the remains and learning about each other, as well as themselves and the world they live in.
Salles, who also directed On The Road (2012) and The Motorcycle Diaries, (also being shown as part of The Nomad’s Latin Series at the Horniman Museum), has mastered the art of the movie in which a journey takes place that is not just a physical one, but also a spiritual experience. Complemented with a gorgeous soundtrack, this is an homage to the beauty of South America and a tender yet gritty film that will really stay with you. Come and be transported.
