“I’ll have what she’s having.”
Sometimes romance blossoms when a boy meets a girl… their eyes meet across a crowded room, a thunderbolt strikes and it’s happily ever after… But sometimes a girl agrees to give a boy a ride across the country and instantly regrets it because she finds the boy to be cynical, chauvinist and arrogant. The boy feels an equal despair at the long haul drive as he finds the girl uptight, precious and naive.
One of these two scenarios is the case with Harry and Sally. For the one or two of you who have yet to experience this golden nugget of New York comedy, we won’t give away too much - but let’s face it: the first of these would make for a pretty dull film. Whereas the second would be the kind of film that would catapult its stars, Meg Ryan (Sleepless in Seattle, French Kiss, You’ve Got Mail, In the Cut) and Billy Crystal (Analyze This, Deconstructing Harry, City Slickers, Monsters Inc.) to the stratosphere of comedic deities in possibly the most re-watchable comic gem to emerge from the 1980’s… and well… ever really. Co-starring the delectable Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia, of course!) and Crystal’s long-time collaborator Bruno Kirby.
Penned by the sadly-missed genius of observational rom-com Nora Ephron and directed by huggable actor-writer-producer-director and all-round legend Rob Reiner - who, along with Crystal and Kirby in cameo roles, stars in one of our other chortelicious offerings This is Spinal Tap at Ealing Summer Screenings this summer.
Even though its been over twenty years since Harry first informed Sally, quite categorically, that men and women can’t be friends, it’s still as much in question now as it has ever been, with films such as Friends With Benefits and No Strings Attached adding to the debate about the elasticity of the term ‘platonic’.
So come and join the Nomad for part of our ‘Evolution of Rom-Com’ series at Fulham Palace for this comic jewel. With hilarious insights into the ongoing battle of the sexes as well as unforgettable and iconic scenes that will make you cringe and crack up - all at the same time.
