On the banks of the Serpentine in Hyde Park, we invite you to join us for cinema under the stars. The Nomad and The Royal Parks’ summer-long season continues with a three night run at Hyde Park Lido, presenting three very special films under the banner of International Explorations.
First up is Jim Jarmusch’s Night On Earth, the American auteur’s most accessible and humorous work, featuring five vignettes set in different cities around the world on the same evening, each focussing on the relationship between a taxi driver, their passengers and the alien late-night metropolitan environments through which they drive.
As the clock turns through the late evening and into the wee small hours, we touch down successively in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki and are invited to tune in to the native language, cultural signifiers, landscapes and stories, before floating away again out of that little universe and on to the next. A fantastic cast clearly enjoys the possibilities offered by this unique set-up; Winona Ryder, Gena Rowlands, Giancarlo Esposito, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Beatrice Dalle and Roberto Benigni give memorable performances, and as the titles roll and the Tom Waits soundtrack comes to a close, you’re left wishing these little episodes would just keep coming and coming.
Why not book yourself in for all three nights? On Saturday 30 July, we present Werner Herzog’s inspirational Amazonian advenutre, Fitzcarraldo, with Emir Kusturica’s Danube-set Gypsy farce Black Cat White Cat concluding a spellbinding weekend of outdoor cinema on Sunday 31 July.
Hyde Park Lido Cafe will be open, serving snacks, wines, beers and spirits. Bring something warm to wear for after sunset. Places are limited so please book early to avoid maaasive disappointment.
We’ll be doing 20 Nomad events in London’s Royal Parks this year - view the full schedule for Royal Parks outdoor cinema.
