This is our final adventure in Richmond Park, and we invite you to join us for a trip down the deadly river Ulanga in the Belgian Congo. The great gnarly John Huston shot his adaptation of the C.S Forester novel on location and it was this backdrop and the clever casting of Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn (Bogie won his only Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of roughneck riverboat captain Charlie Allnut) which elevated the film from run-of-the-mill melodrama to a touching, funny and exciting love story set in the most unlikely of circumstances.
New Yorker critic Pauline Kael described it thus: ”An inspired piece of casting brought Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn together. This is a comedy, a love story, and a tale of adventure, and it is one of the most charming and entertaining movies ever made… Hepburn has revealed that the picture wasn’t going well until Huston came up with the inspiration that she should think of Rosie as Mrs. Roosevelt. After that, Bogart and Hepburn played together with an ease and humor that makes their love affair — the mating of a forbidding, ironclad spinster and a tough, gin-soaked riverboat captain — seem not only inevitable, but perfect.”
And why not join us for more cinema under the stars in Richmond Park? On Wednesday 31 August, we bring you another Spielberg family adventure, Raiders of the Lost Ark, while on Thursday 1 September, there’s more golden-age Spielberg with E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial.
As with all our outdoor screenings, bring a blanket or low chair to sit on, and something warm to wear for after sunset.
We’ll be doing 20 Nomad events in London’s Royal Parks this year - view the full schedule for Royal Parks outdoor cinema. And bear in mind, places are limited, so please do book in advance, to avoid disappointment!
Please note that for public safety and environmental reasons, glass is not permitted anywhere in the Royal Parks. If bringing a picnic, please bring plastic cups and plastic bottles instead. Many thanks.
Richmond Park is known for its stunning Red deer and Fallow deer. The deer can attract ticks so if you have any concerns, please read this Royal Parks Tick Bites and Lymes Disease leaflet.
The screen will be located at Roehampton Gate. There are buses that run along Priory Lane, linking Barnes station to the park.
