Pop-up cinema screening of E.T. at Whiteleys Shopping Centre. The Nomad Cinema presents perhaps Spielberg’s best-loved movie for a bargain £4 per ticket for kids and £8 for adults.
E.T. was initially knocked back by Columbia Pictures, who described it as a ‘wimpy Disney movie’, only to be picked up later by MCA – doh! There are so many memorable scenes and sequences, such inspirational music and effects, so many great ideas (leading to soooo many merchandising opportunities), so much heart, charm and love in the film that it’s easy to forget this ‘wimpy Disney movie’ is also quite a dark look at childhood, families and ‘the suburban ideal’. Indeed, the E.T. character was based on an imaginary friend Steven Spielberg invented during his parents’ messy divorce. Come and reacquaint yourself with E.T. or introduce a new generation to its charms.
This winter The Nomad Cinema takes up residence at Whiteleys Shopping Centre, screening a mixture of recent releases and classic films from all eras.
* This new pop-up cinema concept, created by FITCH and The Nomad, can be found in the space vacated by Books Etc.
* Cinematic décor comes courtesy of an exhibition of vintage film posters from The Reel Picture Company.
* The Vestal Vodka pop-up bar will serve curated cocktails, wine, beer and popcorn, with ice cream available from the Oddono’s Gelati stall (only food and drink bought on site is allowed in the cinema).
* The most unusual cinema seating you’ll ever experience includes beanbags, inflatable wedges, directors chairs and garden benches, plus there’s tiered seating for the more traditional among you.
*And if you spend £10 or more at one of Whiteleys’ restaurants, you’ll be given a voucher that can be exchanged for one free cinema ticket (subject to availability).
