“Let the microphone do the work, sir”
The British public can never be trusted with their cinema-going habits. Apart from the box office bashing caused by each Harry Potter, a film comes along every 5 years or so that sees folk young and old pouring into the nation’s multiplexes; sometimes we’re hoodwinked (The English Patient, we’re looking in your direction) - but sometimes we’re rewarded.
The King’s Speech is everything that The English Patient was not. Lean, powerful and feeling every inch a cinematic adventure despite its undeniably stagey premise, the central casting of Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush packs an Oscar-winning wallop but most importantly, Tom Hooper’s film has heart and soul.
If you’re reading this right now, you are good eggs. The Nomad loves you. You are people of taste, and you agree The English Patient was absolute codswallop. You know we’re bringing you only the best the silver screen has to offer and we’ll do our damndest to make sure we find a perfect venue for your viewing pleasure. That’s why we think you’ll love Walmer Castle; not only is it perched on a particularly beautiful stretch of the Kent coastline, it just happens to be a former home of late Queen Mother, immortalised by Helena Bonham Carter in this very film. Fits like a glove eh? Come join us by the sea, pour yourselves a gin and tonic of Royal proportions, and savour another chance to see finest film of the year.
Beautiful Walmer Castle itself is worth the entrance fee alone! So get there early and have a look around, soak up the atmosphere with your friends and family. There will be delicious food and drink on sale, some appropriately chosen music to get you in the mood, and one or two interesting tidbits on screen. We’d recommend a low chair or picnic blanket to sit on, and something warm to wear for after sunset. Look forward to seeing you there! (Why not also join us at Walmer on 17 August for Gosford Park?)
