What a treat lies in store for those lucky enough to bag a ticket for this one-off Nomad screening in the country’s finest metropolitan cemetery. Each of our Nomad screenings is a special event in its own right, but there’s something about this one which raises the eyebrows, widens the eyes and brings a broad smile of anticipation…
The finest film of 2006 and one of the finest of the new millenium, Pan’s Labyrinth is the great Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s magnum opus, his Citizen Kane. Written, produced, directed and financed by Del Toro, this dark adult fairytale speaks to us as a parable on the themes of innocence and evil, destiny and personal choice, death and rebirth – and what better setting than beautiful and beguiling Brompton Cemetery, with its criss-crossing lanes and avenues, its many thousands of crumbling monuments, its shady corners and swaying, leafy overhangs, its scampering creatures underground, in the undergrowth and overhead.
Set in 1944, in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, the film portrays a terrible reality lined by a child’s fantasy. 12 year old Ofelia moves reluctantly to the countryside with her heavily pregnant mother and her terrible new stepfather, the evil Captain Vidal, who is determined to have a “new, clean Spain”, and sets about the ruthless elimination of the local guerrilla fighters. Near the girl’s new home in the woods lies a ruined labyrinth, into which she starts to regularly plunge. There she meets the imposing and sinister faun of the title, who assigns her three tasks to prove her worth. Cue a succession of beautifully fearsome creatures from the brilliant, dark depths of the director’s imagination, including a huge belching toad and the unforgettable (not matter how hard you try!) Pale Man…
Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment! As with all Nomad screenings, we would recommend you bring a blanket or low chair to sit on, a picnic, wine, and something warm to wear for after sunset.
We’ll be doing 20 Nomad events in London’s Royal Parks this year - view the full schedule for Royal Parks outdoor cinema.
Please note that for public safety and environmental reasons, glass is not permitted anywhere in the Royal Parks. If bringing a picnic, please bring plastic cups and plastic bottles instead. Many thanks.
The screen will be positioned at Central Avenue, in front of the chapel. All access will be via North Gate, on Old Brompton Road, a five-minute walk from West Brompton station.
