2500 acres of beautiful wilderness in London: hills, woodlands, ponds, gardens, grasslands and 650 free roaming red deer – Richmond Park is the largest and wildest of London’s Royal Parks and a fine, fitting backdrop for the Nomad’s 3-night mini-season of Nostalgic Adventure.
We kick off with the one of the greatest adventure films of all time. The perfect marriage of material and star, with Steven Spielberg directing, George Lucas as executive producer and Lawrence Kasdan and Phillip Kaufman on story and script duties, Raiders of the Lost Ark and the subsequent Indiana Jones franchise was a Hollywood powerhouse – its own new Hollywood Golden Age – right from the off.
It was Lucas who came up with the idea of breathing new life into the old cliffhanger serial formula his generation had grown up watching in movie theaters, with their roller-coaster narratives, thrills and spills, heroes and villains. After failing to land Tom Selleck, due to his Magnum P.I. commitments, the tried and trusted Harrison Ford took up the mantle and the rest was history. Ably supported by the excellent Karen Allen as the hard-drinking, dirty-fighting Marion Ravenwood, Ford won over massive worldwide audiences with his laconic charm, easy ruthlessness and believable transformation from bookish professor to all-action hero and back again. Raiders features some of the greatest action set pieces committed to the big screen and, of course, that theme tune – altogether now: “duh de duh-duh, duh-de-duh…”
As always, the team at Nomad HQ are planning to bring you some extra special thrills and spills, the details of which are far too juicy to be given away here. If you wanna know, get clicking.
Why not join us for more cinema under the stars in Richmond Park? On Thursday 1 September, we bring you another Spielberg family adventure, E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, while on Friday 2 September, we go back to 1951 for the legendary John Huston’s African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn.
As with all our outdoor screenings, bring a blanket or low chair to sit on, and something warm to wear for after sunset.
We’ll be doing 20 Nomad events in London’s Royal Parks this year - view the full schedule for Royal Parks outdoor cinema. And bear in mind, places are limited, so please do book in advance, to avoid disappointment!
Please note that for public safety and environmental reasons, glass is not permitted anywhere in the Royal Parks. If bringing a picnic, please bring plastic cups and plastic bottles instead. Many thanks.
Richmond Park is known for its stunning Red deer and Fallow deer. The deer can attract ticks - if you have any concerns, please read this Royal Parks Tick Bites and Lymes Disease leaflet.
The screen will be located at Roehampton Gate. There are buses that run along Priory Lane, linking Barnes station to the park.
