Nobody saw this one coming. Frank Darabont’s starless, mid-budget prison drama sits triumphantly at the top of the Internet Movie Database top 250, where it has seen off various challengers pretty much since IMDB’s inception. It was responsible for the resurrection of Morgan Freeman (not literally) and inspires such devotion in it’s fans that makes other lesser movie makers regularly eff and jeff about it’s credibility as a piece of cinema.
Well we say sod off to those green-eyed losers. Shawshank is a cracking film. Maybe not the best film ever made (that title belongs to Rush Hour 2) but it’s sure as hell got something about it. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are wonderful as the two inspiring jailbirds and they’re helped along by the cream of the crop of American character actors (a special mention goes to Bob Grunton as the devious Warden Norton).
To make our evening at St Augustine’s all the more special, we’ll be administering prison beatings to random members of the audience, so bring a soap bar and a spare sock if you think you’re hard enough. There’ll be some other Nomad-patented special touches which will help set the mood for the movie and make the experience all the better.
