“Far-fetched, fantasy and fear” is the heading under which The Nomad presents three very different, very brilliant films at beautiful Bushy Park on three Thursday evenings this summer. Our second instalment of pop-up cinema at Bushy is Hayao Miyazaki’s magical Spirited Away.
Beautifully drawn, superbly animated and now Japan’s most successful film of all time, Spirited Away was yet another critically-acclaimed worldwide box office hit from Miyazaki’s famous Studio Ghibli, which also produced Ponyo and Howl’s Moving Castle – films which, like Spirited Away, have captured the imagination of adults as they have children.
On the surface Spirited Away is a coming of age tale with Alice In Wonderland references, as we follow the sullen, spoiled Chichiro into a magical realm from whence (yes, whence!) she must find her way back to reality. Bubbling under the surface are comments on ecological pollution, intergenerational conflict and the tension in Japanese society as the country struggles to accommodate its position as a global consumer society alongside its yearning for a return the more traditional, spiritual values of Old Japan. But as you lie back in the park, you may simply content yourself with letting the whole mindboggling visual experience wash over you, as you nibble on your picnic and sip your wine. (That’s what we’ll be doing…)
The boffins in the Nomad HQ creativity division are currently putting their finishing touches to a dazzling array of extra treats to tickle your cinematic fancies, so get booking… Please note that for the benefit of our younger audience members, we will be screening the dubbed version of this animation.
Join us for three nights of cinema al fresco, under the stars in Bushy Park. Either side of Spirited Away, we’ll be showing Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds on Thursday 28 July, with Wolfgang Petersen’s wonderful family fantasy The Neverending Story completing our trio of screenings on Thursday 25 August.
Spaces are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment!
We’ll be doing 20 Nomad events in London’s Royal Parks this year - view the full schedule for Royal Parks outdoor cinema.
Please note that for public safety and environmental reasons, glass is not permitted anywhere in the Royal Parks. If bringing a picnic, please bring plastic cups and plastic bottles instead. Many thanks.
The screen will be located at the Woodland Gardens Pheasantry Welcome centre, benefitting from amenities including limited parking, toilets and a cafe. Access is from Teddington Gate from the North, Hampton Court Gate from the south or via Hampton Hill New Gate from the West. The best train stations are Teddington, Hampton Court or Hampton, though all require a 10-15 minute walk to get to the park.
