“Far-fetched, fantasy and fear” is the heading under which The Nomad presents three very different, very brilliant films at beautiful Bushy Park on three Thursday evenings this summer. Our final screening at this wonderful location is Wolfgang Petersen’s superb 1984 family fantasy adventure, The Neverending Story.

Another slice of film fantasy par excellence for the whole family and, for a certain generation, a big dollop of nostalgia for what was one of the films to give VHS home video blast-off in the mid 80s, The Neverending Story is a cut-above the other fantasy offerings from Hollywood during this period. The film is a German-American co-production, based on the 1979 (rather dark) children’s novel by German author Michael Ende and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the German director whose 1981 submarine classic Das Boot earned him multiple nominations and awards. In this story the enemy threatening to destroy the world of Fantasia is “The Nothing”, an all-consuming dark force of nothingness – see what we mean about dark?

Our hero Bastian, discovers the land of Fantasia through a “dangerous” storybook the local shopkeeper has warned him about, but which he pilfers anyway, before hiding himself away in the school attic, where he reads his way through the story, gradually bringing it to life and finding himself immersed. Cue a memorable line-up of entertaining, muppet-esque creatures and a powerful message about the need for children to have faith in stories and storytelling. Oh, and that Giorgio Moroder-written theme tune, performed by none other than Limahl – may we suggest you look it up on YouTube for a quick reminder? Rumour has it Leonardo di Caprio’s production company are planning a reboot of this 1984 classic – watch this space…

Join us for three nights of cinema al fresco, under the stars in Bushy Park. We’ll also be showing Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds on Thursday 28 July, and Hayao Miyazaki’s incomparable Spirited Away on Thursday 4 August.

Spaces are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment!

We’ll be doing 20 Nomad events in London’s Royal Parks this year - view the full schedule for Royal Parks outdoor cinema.

Please note that for public safety and environmental reasons, glass is not permitted anywhere in the Royal Parks. If bringing a picnic, please bring plastic cups and plastic bottles instead. Many thanks.

(The screen will be located at the Woodland Gardens Pheasantry Welcome centre, benefitting from amenities including limited parking, toilets and a cafe. Access is from Teddington Gate from the North, Hampton Court Gate from the south or via Hampton Hill New Gate from the West. The best train stations are Teddington, Hampton Court or Hampton, though all require a 10-15 minute walk to get to the park)
