Meantime and The Nomad’s Summer Cinema weekend of classic films under the stars with London’s favourite beers kicks off with Christopher Nolan’s (The Dark Knight, Inception) now-legendary early feature, starring Guy Pearce as a man desperately trying to piece together his past.
Despite looking disconcertingly like Tim-nice-but-dim, Christopher Nolan is the current king of cerebral mainstream cinema. While he’s still riding high off the phenomenal success of his Batman reboot (the cameras are rolling on a third as we speak) and his high concept hit Inception busted all kind of blocks, Your pals at the Nomad and Greenwich Meantime Brewery feel it’s about ‘time’ to revisit Memento, his superb sophomore effort that put his name firmly on the map.
Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, a man on a mission to avenge the brutal murder of his wife. So far so good. But there’s just one catch: since her death, he’s incapable of creating new memories. Luckily he’s aware of this and with the help of his trusty biro and needle, he’s tatooed across his body a jigsaw of clues he’s gathered to find the identity of the killer. His friend Teddy is along for the ride and seems all too willing to point him in the right direction.
How’s that for a tantilising prospect? You want more? well gosh darn it you get more. Nolan relates the story is visceral chunks. Backwards. Beginning and the end and.. you know the rest. This dizzying conceit unfolds perfectly and never resorts to cheap tricks; things stay so watertight that when the films finished, you want to watch it again in reverse.
So come down early and join the Nomad Cinema for a pint or two of London’s finest in one of the city’s most dazzling outdoor spots which we’ll be illuminating with otherworldly lights once the suns come down. Be ready to be festooned with ink (temporarily mind you) by our team of body artists and grab a bag of some of the wackiest popcorn you’ll ever taste courtesy of the boys of Love Da Pop (www.lovedapop.com). If you have a memory like a sieve and you ain’t scared of needles, you better get booking. It will be an unforgettable experience.
No picnics at this one please folks - local heroes Meantime Brewing will be running a fantastic beer tent and Airstream Alfresco will be serving up a feast of hot and cold food from their curvaceous caravan.
