Meantime and The Nomad’s Summer Cinema weekend of classic films under the stars with London’s finest beers continues with Terry Gilliam’s wonderful, time-travelling, dwarf-championing romp.
How flippin’ cool would it be to be awoken from your slumber by a knight on horseback busting forth from your wardrobe? Add to that a gang of treasure-hunting dwarves with the ability to travel through time and you’ve got yourself the dream night for adventurous boys and girls of any age.
Former Monty Python member Terry Gilliam’s called upon some seriously heavyweight acting talent for his 1981 fantasy, recruiting a pair of Pythonites in John Cleese and Michael Palin (Palin also leant a hand with the script) as well as the world’s favourite Scotsman Sean Connery as King Agamemnon. British acting legends Peter Vaughan, Ralph Richardson and David Warner are all on-hand to add their acting chops to the mix but it’s the presence of the diminutive David Rappaport as the marauding leader of the gang of little folk who steals the show.
It is easy to poke holes in any Gilliam movie and his reputation for an inability to create fully coherent pieces of cinema is not undue. But when given the licence to let his imagination take centre stage, the results are electrifying. If you haven’t managed to catch this forgotten gem before, get on yer horse and get down to Greenwich. We’ll be waiting for you with some surprises to keep you on your toes, just you wait and see.
As the trailer tells us: “Time Bandits: we love it, and we’re pretty sure you will too”.
No picnics at this one please folks - local heroes Meantime Brewing will be running a fantastic beer tent and Airstream Alfresco will be serving up a feast of hot and cold food from their curvaceous caravan.
Sign up for a whole weekend of outdoor cinema and finest beers: join us on Fri 8 July for MEMENTO and Sun 10 July for GROUNDHOG DAY…
